Credit Default Swaps

The Credit Default Swaps information list is part of an ongoing effort to help people in SME capital market networks think through developing business opportunities as new multi-billion dollar programs are launched to address financial deleveraging in the global economy.

Credit Default Swaps is an emerging issue that may offer entrepreneurs, job seekers and service and solution providers a new business opportunity. Initial research reveals that Credit Default Swaps are a $90-trillion (that’s T for trillion) sub-market within the $180-T derivatives market.

Government reports and SEC Testimony indicate that regulatory oversight gaps and lack of transparency enabled leveraged transactions that may need more information produced to ensure the insurance claims that are behind or part of a Credit Default Swap can be covered.  Service and solution providers with compliance, busienss intelligence and business process capabilities may find opportunities as transparency is imposed on the credit default swaps market place.  Credit-default swaps are insurance-like contracts issued to cover potential losses on corporate debt, municipal bonds or mortgage securities. Typically sold by banks and hedge funds, they are designed to provide protection against any defaults.  The nation's commercial banks held $180.3 trillion in derivative contracts during the first quarter of 2008, with more than half that total in credit-default swaps according to data from the federal Comptroller of the Currency.
